Allergies

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to a ‘trigger’ or allergen.1 A common type of allergy is hay fever, which occurs when the body reacts to pollen or dust.2 The following dietary and lifestyle tips can help alleviate hay fever symptoms:

  • Stay indoors in the morning and evening when the pollen levels are highest.3
  • Rinse your sinuses with a combination of warm water, about a quarter-teaspoon of salt, and a quarter-teaspoon of baking soda. It helps to flush out mucus and allergens from inside the nose.4
  • Wash your clothes and bedding often and hang the clothes to dry inside the house.5
  • Wear a mask when doing outdoor activities such as gardening.6
  • Eat foods rich in antioxidants as these help prevent free radical damage and support the immune system. Foods rich in antioxidants include grapes, tomatoes, apples and oranges.7
  • Include cold water fish in the diet such as salmon, trout, herring, sardines and tuna. These are rich in omega‐3 fatty acids which can help reduce inflammation associated with allergies.4
  • Add garlic to your cooking. It is a good antioxidant and also helps reduce inflammation.8
  • Take a daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement as nutritional insurance to meet your body’s nutrient needs. This may help reduce the risk of many health problems including fatigue, lowered immunity and impaired cognitive function.9
