Colds & Immunity

Colds are caused by a number of different viruses.1 There is no cure for the common cold, however there are simple measures you can take to help alleviate the symptoms while helping the body fight off the infection.2 A few tips are:

  • Eat fruits and vegetables that contain Beta-carotene, Vitamin C & E. These are rich in antioxidant nutrients which help fight infections and speed up recovery time.3
  • Drink plenty of fluids to help break up congestion and keep the body hydrated. Include water, fresh fruit and vegetable juice and clear soups and broths. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as these cause dehydration.4
  • Warm drinks will help ease a sore throat and dry mouth.1 Try a combination of lemon, ginger and honey made as a tea.
  • Gargle with warm water and salt. It will help sooth sore throats.2
  • Get plenty of rest as it helps your body fight off colds.4
  • The viruses that cause colds are spread by sneezing, coughing and hand contact.1 The spread of viruses can be reduced by regular hand washing.
  • Take a daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement as nutritional insurance to meet your body’s nutrient needs. This may help reduce the risk of many health problems including fatigue, lowered immunity and impaired cognitive function.5
